Search for articles from scholarly, general business, and trade journals in any of the Business articles databases available through the Library.

ABI/Inform (Proquest): Business news in scholarly and trade journals, general business magazines, and newspapers; includes the Wall Street Journal.

Business Source Complete (Ebsco): Business journals and trends; includes Datamonitor company reports as well as industry reports.

Lexis Nexis Academic Universe: Excellent source for newspapers. Search under both "news" and "business." Company and financial information is available under "Business."

Lexis Nexis Statistical Universe: Searchable statistical tables and abstracts; links to other statistic-related Web sites.

Advertisers and Agencies

The Advertising Red Books Online The Red Books are standard reference books for advertisers. Available in several volumes, they provide information on companies, their advertising expenditures as well as advertising agenices. Information incudes:

Advertisers Business Classification
Contains data on more than 14,000 companies in the United States and Canada that spend more than $200,000 on advertising. Company data includes name, location, tradename, contact information, Web site, and advertising expentirures. Also includes list of leading advertisers by expentiture and leading advertisers by Media (i.e., Top 25 Advertisers based on Newspapers, etc.)

Advertisers Index
Index of companies listed in the Advertisers Business Classification. Allows you to locate company information by state, brand name, SIC Code, and personel.

Advertising Cost

SRDS (Standard Rate and Data Services) SRDS is an online database that gives advertising information for various forms of media. Not every listing will include all advertising information. What is available in SRDS is only as good as what they get from the client. For many items--especially print--SRDS includes a link to the publication's media kit. Media kits will often include both advertising information, but information on who is reading their publication.

Areas covered in SRDS include:

  • SRDS Direct Marketing List Source: Directory of lists used by direct marketers for advertising. Each listing includes type of list, list manager, contact information, description of list, source, number on list, and cost.
  • SRDS Interactive Advertising source: Provides advertising information on Interactive/Internet publications. Includes basic information for the resourcs: location, contact info, etc.; also provides advertising sales contacts, represntative firms/ad networks, site information, usage/circulation, audience profile, advertising rates, and more. The Interactive guide does not list cost of advertising for ever site--what is available depends on the information the site provides
  • SRDS Business Publication Advertising Source: Provides advertising information for trade publications. Most listings include publication title, publication name, important personnel, contact information, publication schedule, type of ads available, and ad rates
  • SRDS Consumer Magazine Advertising Source: Provides advertising information for consumer publications. Most listings include publication title, publication name, important personnel, contact information, publication schedule, type of ads available, and ad rates
  • SRDS Newspaper Advertising Schedule: Provides advertising information for newspapers. Most listings include publication title, publication name, important personnel, contact information, publication schedule, type of ads available, and ad rates.
  • SRDS Radio Advertising Source: Provides advertising information for newspapers. Organized by state. Each listing publication title, publication name, important personnel, contact information, publication schedule, type of ads available, and ad rates.
  • SRDS TV & Cable Source: Provides advertising information for TV and cable stations. Organized by market. Each listing has basic information about the station, including contact information. Ad rates are not included because rates vary based on time slot, viewership, etc.

The Census offers numerous sources regarding population, income and housing. One of the most useful areas will be the American Factfinder. You can look at the population and spending patterns by state, county, city, or zip code.

Claritas Zip Code Look-up will provide you with demographic info, including a short description of what some of the information means.
